Propecia is the trade name for the medication finasteride. It is an oral medication manufactured by Merck Pharmaceuticals and is supplied as a 1 mg tablet (Proscar is manufactured as a 5 mg tablet for the treatment of prostate hypertrophy). The daily dosage is 1 mg a day. Finasteride acts by blocking the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone, one of the hormones responsible for male pattern hair loss. Studies have shown that approximately 90% of the men taking finasteride daily maintained or increased their hair growth where 10% lost hair. Finasteride has been used clinical for the treatment of hair loss in men since 1997 under the name of Propecia. At our Portland hair loss center, schedule a consultation with Dr. Gabel to determine if you are a candidate for finasteride.

During the hair cycle, it is normal for adult men and women to shed about 50 -100 hairs a day. If one is shedding significantly more hair then that in a single day, you may want to consult your physician and find if there is a cause.
The reason we shed
The main reason for the shedding is simply due to the hair cycle. The hair cycle consists of three phases: anagen, catagen, and telogen. The anagen phase is the growing phase and can last about 2 to 6 years for scalp hair, or much less in eyebrow/eyelash hairs of only a few months. At some point, the cell is programmed genetically to move from the anagen phase to the catagen phase. This is where the follicles start to shorten and thin. This phase lasts for a few weeks, and then the hair enters the telogen phase, or resting phase. During this period, the hair shaft itself is shed. This phase can last a few months, but the good news is that the hair then reenters the growing anagen phase. It is during this phase that a new hair shaft emerges from the scalp and grows like before.
Evaluation & Examination
At the Gabel Hair Restoration Center, Dr. Gabel evaluates and examines the patient’s hairs and % that are in each different phase. Additionally, when we perform a hair transplant, we actively search for the follicles that are in catagen and telogen phases. This will help to maximize our patient’s results.
