Patients seeking to restore missing eyebrows or to repair partially missing eyebrows may want to consider eyebrow transplantation. Eyebrow transplantation offers natural, permanent results for people who desire fuller eyebrows. The surgery involves transplantation of micro-grafts of 1 -2 hairs from a donor area to the eyebrow. The density and number of eyebrow hairs transplanted varies with each case, and some patients may require an additional session to achieve their goal. Two or more sessions several months apart are common.
In the procedure, hair-bearing skin and subcutaneous tissue of appropriate texture and orientation to serve as eyebrow hair is removed from a donor area on the scalp and grafted into the surgically-prepared eyebrow site. The removal from the donor area is undetectable.
At the Gabel Center, we recreate the eyebrow in a natural contour with donor hair taken from a site that has finer rather than coarser hair. This is because finer hair is a better match for eyebrow hair. Using fine surgical instrumentation, we place each micro-graft into an incision prepared for it with our custom-cut microblades, ensuring proper direction and growth of each hair.
Postoperatively, there may be some mild bruising, swelling and discomfort at the eyebrow and donor site areas for which we will prescribe medication. We will also give you detailed instructions for postoperative care.
After 3 weeks, the transplanted hair usually sheds while the follicle inside the eyebrow remains alive and active. After 6 - 8 weeks, the eyebrows start to grow and will have the same characteristics as the donor hair.
For aesthetics, the new eyebrow hairs may require occasional trimming as well as gel or wax for “training” the hair to grow in the desired direction. You can expect a full cosmetic result in 12 months.
