Hair transplantation, a very specialized procedure performed by a select few, is the only procedure used to restore eyelash hair. The density and number of eyelashes transplanted varies with each case, and some patients may require an additional session to achieve their goal. Fine donor hair, rather than coarse hair, is used to create micro- grafts of single hairs to be meticulously placed into the lid using very fine surgical instrumentation to ensure proper direction and growth of each hair.
After the operation, we prescribe medication to relieve any postoperative symptoms such as some mild bruising, swelling, and discomfort such as itching at the eyelid and donor site areas. Additionally, we provide the patient with detailed instructions for the postoperative period.
After 3 weeks, the transplanted hair usually sheds while the follicle inside the eyelid remains alive and active. Then just 6 - 8 weeks later, the eyelashes or eyebrows start to grow and will have the same characteristics as the donor hair.
Training of the transplanted hairs into the eyelash conformation may be accomplished by trimming, curling with an eyelash curler, and the use of lash oil. A full cosmetic result can be expected in 12 months.
