The Consultation
What can I expect from the consultation appointment?
Prior to your consultation appointment, our office will typically send forms for you to complete regarding
your hair loss, family and medical history. Please bring these with you to your appointment.
Our patient coordinator will briefly review your history forms with you and go over basic information with
you about the procedure.
Next you will meet with Dr. Steven Gabel and he will evaluate your individual circumstances, discuss your
goals and expectations, answer all of your questions, and guide you in creating a personal treatment plan.
Finally you will meet with our patient coordinator to review and answer any questions you have regarding
costs, scheduling, and payment options.
How long does the appointment last?
Most consultation appointments last for approximately one hour.
What is the donor area?
The donor area is located at the back of the head and extends around and above the ears on the sides of the
scalp. This is the area that the grafts are harvested or taken from. The hair is harvested from this area
because the hairs that grow in this area are genetically programmed to resist hair loss, allowing for long
lasting hair transplant results.
What is a follicular unit?
Follicular units are naturally occurring groupings of hairs. Under a microscope you are able to see that the
hairs on your scalp grow out of a central point in groups of 2-4 hairs or singly by themselves. These are
follicular units.
What is a graft?
A graft is a single hair or grouping of hairs that is ready to be inserted into the scalp; most often it is a
follicular unit.
FUE, FUT, and the strip method?
FUE is an abbreviation for follicular unit extraction and FUT is an abbreviation for follicular unit
transplantation. You may also see FUT called the strip method.
FUE is a method in which a small punch- like device is used to remove individual follicular units from the
donor area. With FUT or the strip method a piece of hair bearing scalp is removed from the donor area. The
wound is then stitched or stapled closed.
Can a transplant look natural?
State of the art hair transplantation is performed in such a way that it will look natural in the present and on
into the future. Single hair grafts are placed into the frontal hair line to create a soft, natural appearance.
The angle and direction of hair growth follows a pattern that mimics nature.
Will I have scarring?
Any time a cut is made there will be some degree of scarring and some people are more prone to scarring
than others. In most patients the scarring can be easily concealed with their hair and many patients say the
scar is undetectable even to their hair stylist.
