After Surgery
Will I have pain?
You can expect pain at the donor site after the procedure. It is usually worst the first night. You will be
provided with pain medication to help with this.
Will I be able to sleep?
Sleeping can be challenging for some after the procedure, but you will be provided with general tips to keep
you comfortable and if needed advice specific to your situation.
Will I have swelling?
You will be given instructions to help minimize swelling, but you can expect at least mild swelling after the
procedure. The swelling is usually worst at day 3-4 and resolves rapidly within a day or two.
How do I care for the grafts?
You will gently cleanse the area each day. We will provide you with a detailed instruction booklet prior to
the procedure so that you are well informed regarding the after care and what to do each day. You are
encouraged to return to the office the next day to have the staff guide you through the first cleaning, check
the grafts, and answer your questions.
When are the stitches removed?
If stitches are used that need to be removed, the office will schedule an appointment for you to return 10
days after surgery to have these taken out. If you are not able to return to the office to have your stitches
removed Dr. Gabel will discuss alternate options with you.
Will I be able to go out in public?
Unless your existing hair is able to conceal the transplanted area, it will be noticeable that something was
done for about 10-14 days after the procedure.
Can I wear a hat or scarf after surgery?
It is usually acceptable to wear a hat or scarf after surgery. Please bring these items with you to the office so
that Dr. Gabel and the staff can help you select a suitable covering and instruct you on how to put it on and
take it off.
When can I return to work?
We recommend that you schedule a quiet week after surgery. Many patients whose work is not physically
demanding and who do not have to interact with the public or are able to wear a hat, will return to work
within 2-3 days after surgery.
When can I resume and normal activities and exercise?
You should avoid strenuous activities for at least 2 weeks after surgery. You can resume exercise
gradually, starting with activities such as walking and lifting light weights shortly after surgery.
Why are the transplants falling out?
Within 1-4 weeks after surgery the transplanted hairs will shed. This is normal and they will begin to
re-grow within 3-4 months.
At what point are the grafts secured?
The grafts are securely in place after 3 weeks.
When can I get my hair cut and/or colored?
After 3 weeks you will be able to cut and color your hair and can shampoo and style it as you wish.
