Surgery Day

What should I expect?

When you arrive at the office on the morning of surgery you will be greeted by a staff member who will take
your vitals and review the necessary paperwork with you.  Dr. Gabel will spend time with you finalizing the
surgical plan and taking photographs.

You will then be taken into the surgical suite where the donor area will be prepped and Dr. Gabel will begin
the numbing process. Once you are completely numb the donor follicles are removed and the staff will
begin preparing the grafts.

The next step is to numb the area to be transplanted and create the tiny incisions (recipient sites) into
which the grafts are placed. The rest of the day is spent placing the grafts.

Does it hurt?

We will do all that we can to contribute to your comfort during the day. For most people there is some pain
during the initial numbing process, similar to that of being numbed at the dentist. Once you are numb you
are kept numb so throughout the day that you do not feel any pain.

Am I awake during the surgery?

The procedure is done under local anesthesia, meaning that the area that is being worked on is injected with
numbing medication. If needed a mild oral sedative will be provided to help you relax.

What will I be doing during the procedure?

You will be in a reclined position and able to choose from a selection of music and movies to watch or listen
to during the procedure. Many patients will chat with Dr. Gabel and the staff, read or even sleep during the
procedure.

Will I have any breaks?

You will be given a quick break every hour, or so, to get up, stretch, use the washroom, and have a snack.
You will also have a short break around noon to eat lunch.

How long does the procedure take?

The procedure typically lasts all day.

Will I be able to drive myself home?

It is recommended that someone drive you home after the procedure.
