A Few Facts About Hair Loss

How Many Men Suffer from Significant Hair Loss?

The American Hair Loss Association has observed that approximately two-thirds of men will notice some degree of thinning or baldness by the age of 35. By the age of 50, however, approximately 85 percent of men will have significantly thinner hair or baldness.

Hair Loss Can Occur at any Young Age

A majority of men begin to notice thinning hair close to the age of 35, many will experience male pattern baldness much sooner, as early as 16 in some unfortunate cases. The American Hair Loss Association estimates that approximately 25 percent of men affected by thinning hair will begin to notice symptoms before the age of 21.

Men in these younger age groups report being negatively impacted by the premature change in their appearance and prone to psychological stress from their condition more so than other age groups of men.

The “Bald Gene” is Inherited from Your Mother

It’s long been an old wives tale that hereditary hair loss is inherited from your mother’s side of the family, and although not exclusively true in all people, it turns out that as a general rule of thumb, this is, in fact, a reliable indicator of a male’s genetic prospects when it comes to hair loss.

Genetics plays a huge role in whether or not an individual will experience thinning hair. And both your mother’s and father’s genes can cause hair loss. However, your mother’s genes actually have the strongest impact. Experts believe that about 30 million women and 50 million men experience hair loss due solely to hereditary reasons.

Women Can Experience Genetic Hair Loss

Although thinning hair is commonly thought to be a condition exclusive to men, there are statistically many women who also suffer from the condition. It’s estimated that as many as 40 percent of all hair loss patients are female. Additionally, it has been observed that by the age of 50, nearly half of all women will have some degree of hair loss, mostly attributed to genetics.
