About the FUE Procedure
This 36-year-old man was concerned about his receding hairline and decided to consult with Dr. Gabel on what could be done to restore it. After his examination, the patient was found to be a great candidate for a hair transplant surgery. He opted for the #FollicularUnitExcision where FUE grafts are extracted and inserted into the frontal hairline. In total, #2481 #hairgrafts were moved to the outlined area. His post-op photos are 3 years and 7 months after surgery. The patient is excited and more than satisfied with the final results. See the full results here in our gallery.
What is FUE?
Follicular unit extraction (FUE) is a hair restoration surgery that aims to harvest hair follicles from an area of existing hair (typically the back of the scalp) and place them in an area of hair loss or thinning hair. It is one of the most effective options for male pattern baldness, where hair begins to thin around the frontal hairline, crown, and mid-scalp. Once in place, the transplanted hair grafts begin to experience new hair growth. Despite being called surgery, it is a relatively minimally invasive procedure.
What Happens During FUE Hair Transplant Surgery?
An FUE hair transplant procedure begins with locating appropriate donor hair. A hair transplant surgeon such as Dr. Gabel will mark the recipient sites for the transplanted hairs. The donor area is then trimmed and anesthetic is applied before the hair transplantation procedure. Using a very high-powered magnifying glass, Dr. Gabel will remove individual hair follicles using a specialized punch tool. Similar miniscule punches will be made in the recipient sites and the follicles will be placed.
The FUE Recovery Process
Recovery from an FUE hair transplant procedure is relatively minor. You will return home to rest afterward and Dr. Gabel will provide instructions on washing your hair, sleeping, and caring for the surgical sites. Most patients return to normal activities within a few days. New growth and visible results from the transplanted hair can require several months, taking up to one year to show the final result. Dr. Gabel will discuss ways to maintain results with medications and non-surgical treatments.
